The Vanier Community Association has launched a new program to help fund its activities.
Dan Shipley, treasurer for the association, announced the new program, called Friends of Vanier, at the group’s monthly meeting on Jan. 8. The program is intended to be a way for local businesses, service clubs and organizations to contribute to the community association.
“The goal is to allow all of us to work together,” Shipley said. “We are not trying to replace the BIA (business improvement area), but I think this is a way to offer the businesses a different opportunity in the community.”
For $120, a business or organization will receive identification on the new association’s website as well as promotion on its Facebook and Twitter pages.
As part of the launch, the group has produced a promotional sheet that will be circulated in the community.
Shipley said that there are 400 businesses in Vanier and if 20 businesses sign on it will be considered a small success.
“The more we raise the better,” he said. “I think there is a huge advantage for businesses to participate.”
Shipley said the association will take a closer look at how well the new program is doing at its February meeting.
Any money raised through this new initiative will go towards hosting events such as movies in the park and carnivals the association said.
