Library construction to begin in March

Ottawa East News

Construction on the West District branch library is now scheduled to begin on March 1.

Crews are aiming to start the work at the beginning of March, to be completed by 2014, said Kanata North Coun. Marianne Wilkinson.

The Ottawa Public Library approved a two-storey addition to the existing library and selected Canadian company Moriyama and Teshima Architects to design the building, which will be 2,300 square metres.

The Beaverbrook library will be closed during the construction period, but books ordered online can be picked up at the Beaverbrook Mall, 2 Beaverbrook Rd., while all other services can be accessed through the Ottawa Public Library’s Hazeldean (50 Castlefrank Rd.) and Stittsville (1637 Main St.) branches.

The rest of the Mlacak Centre, which houses the Kanata Civic Art Gallery, the Kanata Seniors Centre and more, will remain open to the public.

“Access may have to be through the arena at some times,” said Wilkinson.

A sign about construction details is set to be unveiled on Dec. 4 at the library, she said.
