Shoppers Drug Mart acquires Glebe Apothecary

Ottawa East News

The Glebe Apothecary, founded 26 years ago in the heart of the central Ottawa neighbourhood, has been sold to the national pharmacy chain Shoppers Drug Mart.

“I can confirm that Shoppers Drug Mart has acquired The Glebe Apothecary and that the sign and product offering will remain as is,” said Shoppers Drug Mart spokeswoman Lisa Gibson.

“We understand that The Glebe Apothecary provides the community with a specialized product offering and level of service and that will continue.”

A statement on the store’s website also confirmed the sale: “To our friends and loyal customers: You may have noticed that we have become part of the Shoppers Drug Mart family, and you may be wondering what this means to you, our customer. We are and will continue to be The Glebe Apothecary, with the same people and the same commitment to customer service and our community. Our commitment to you will not waiver, and our customers remain our number one priority.”

Paul Davies, who has worked at the store for 18 years, told Ottawa This Week that the sale took effect on Jan.11.

“Tuesday was our first day as the new Glebe Apothecary,” he said.

He said the new ownership has committed to keep the name of the store and the staff.

“It’s the same people, it’s the same sign out front, we have the same unique products and we are going to continue with that,” he said.

The store will also stock Life brand products, which is the Shoppers Drug Mart private label brand.

“The only change customers will notice is the introduction of Life Brand products. The staff and rest of the product assortment will remain the same,” Gibson added.

The Apothecary has offered services not commonly available including making prescription drugs in the store, a service it plans to continue.

Some patients don’t respond to common drug therapies and need medicine at strengths that are not manufactured by drug companies or require the medication that is ingested in an uncommon manner.

“Pharmaceutical compounding meets these needs,” said Davies.

Shoppers Drug Mart’s presence in Ottawa has expanded rapidly in recent years, adding new stores and expanding existing locations across the city.

While Shoppers has purchased specialized stores before, this is the first time they have kept the name and signage in place, Gibson said.

A new Shoppers Drug Mart is also currently being devloped at Bank Street and Sunnyside Avenue.

“The store on Sunnyside and Bank is at this point set to open at the end of March,” Gibson said.
